Date: 2014-11-03 08:29 pm (UTC)It was a lesson not unknown to Boromir, either. All Men died, and he had, at least, found a good death; the best one he could have asked for, following his last minutes of life. He'd thought of this, as he'd slipped into darkness, as the pain had grown more distant and the cool water of the river risen around him-- it was not good enough, not honorable enough, and no one would sing of it, if they knew the truth. But it was better than he deserved.
He'd accepted this. He'd given himself over. So when they burst back into Life together-- when breath came back to him, all at once-- when suddenly the air crawled, sharp and cold, into his lungs, when the ground filled in under and around him, when the pain came back-- his first thought was not I have come back to life.
He didn't have a first thought, in truth. Just the ache in his chest (less acute than it had been, but still sharp), the dim and fading memory of water closing over his head, and-- and the stranger in front of him.
He didn't yet have it in him to speak, or to do more than breathe cold, uncomfortable breaths-- but he stared at her, bewildered, pained, alarmed, questioning.
